Baseball Betting Markets

Baseball is a huge global betting phenomenon with Major League Baseball (MLB) the biggest draw. There are competitive baseball leagues in Japan, Cuba, Puerto Rica and the Dominican Republic but it is MLB that most bets are placed on. In fact MLB is the most popular baseball league and has the highest season attendance of any sports league in the world, exceeding 72 million spectators each season since 2006.

Most major Baseball betting sites offer over 50 betting markets on a single game with big popular games having over 100 markets.

But what do all these betting markets mean? Here’s a simple explanation of the most popular Baseball betting markets:

Moneyline – Full time result, to win the game. The moneyline shows the odds to wager on the outright winner. There are no ties in Baseball.

Spread – As in points spread, the spread represents the expected difference in score between the two Baseball teams. The spread in Baseball is known as the “Run line”. Also called a handicap.

Total – Total runs, Over or Under a games total runs, combined runs by each team at the end of a game.

Futures – Futures betting. Tournament out rights on the winner of a particular tournament, league winners, player awards. Betting on the outcome of an event occurring in the future.

Prop betting – Game props are a proposition bet or side bet. In Baseball prop bets are:

Extra innings – A yes or no bet on whether extra innings will be required.
Will there be a run scored in the first inning?
Total Hits, Runs and Errors for both teams combined (over/under)
First team to reach 3 runs in the game
Specific team’s total runs (over/under)
Total Home Runs hit in the game combined (over/under)
Total Hits, Runs and RBI’s (over/under) – Player prop bet
Total Strikeouts (over/under) – Player prop bet
Will a player hit a Home Run? (over/under 0.5) – Player prop bet
Most Hits, Runs and RBI’s (player vs player) – Player prop bet
