2023 Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival is one of the premier jump meetings in the National Hunt racing calendar in the UK. The festival takes place ever year in Cheltenham at the Prestbury Park Racecourse in Gloucestershire. Perhaps due to the timing of the Festival, co-inciding with St Patrick’s Day, the racing heavily features many of the best English and Irish trained horses – and the meeting is very popular with Irish racing enthusiasts.

The festival now takes place over the course four days, changing from three days in 2005 to ensure there would be one championship race on each day. The festival ends with the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup on the Friday but includes a number of other Grade 1 races including Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and World Hurdle. In 2005 five new races were added to ensure each day would still have six races, and two further races have subsequently been added bringing the total to 26 races overall at the Festival.

It is a very heavily bet on Festival, offering prize money second only to the Grand National, with hundreds of millions of pounds worth of bets being placed over the week. The atmosphere at the Cheltenham Festival is said to be unique, and a particularly highlight is the “Cheltenham Roar” – referring to the noise from the crowd as the starter raises the tape for the first race of the festival.

Originating in 1860, the Cheltenham Festival was originally named the Grand National Hunt Meeting and was held first at Market Harborough and then at a number of other location but by the start of the 20th Century it was most often hosted by Warwick Racecourse.

It moved to a new course, Prestbury Park in Cheltenham for a couple of years and then back to Warwick, however some further improvements to the Cheltenham course including a new stand, miles of drainage to prevent unsuitable racing ground, tar paving in the enclosures and the paddock extended to 35 saddling boxes ensured that the National Hunt Committee agreed the Festival should return to Prestbury Park in Cheltenham and it has stayed there ever since!

Notable Cheltenham trainers include Willie Mullins, Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls with Ruby Walsh being the most successful Cheltenham rider with more Top Jockey awards than any other rider.

The 2023 Cheltenham Festival Horse Race meeting will be held over 4 days between Tuesday, 14th March 2023 and Friday, 17th March 2023.
