2023 Wimbledon Tennis Championship
Held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877, The Championships, Wimbledon – universally known simply as Wimbledon, is considered by many as the most prestigious as well as oldest tennis tournament in the world.
The All England Croquet Club was a private club founded in 1868, it was firstly just a croquet club but in 1876 lawn tennis was included in the activities offered by the club. Following this, the club was renamed The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club and in doing so instituted the first Lawn Tennis Championship.
A new set of rules, replacing the code administered by the Marylebone Cricket Club, was drawn up for the event. Amazingly, given the length of time passed, today’s rules are very similar except for details such as the height of the net and posts and the distance of the service line from the net.
Winners were first awarded prize money in 1968 when professional players were allowed to compete in the tournament for the first time. Then total prize money was £26,150 … £2,000 was given to the winner of the men’s single title and £750 to the winner of the women’s single title.
Now Wimbledon consists of five main events, four junior events and seven invitation events. In 2017, total prize money was allocated at over £31 million, with both the Gentlemen’s and the Ladies Singles Champions each receiving £2.2 million, a 10% increase from the previous year.
Currently one of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments consisting of the US Open, the Australian Open and the French Open, Wimbledon is the only one still played on grass courts following the Australian Open change to hardcourt play in 1988.
A system of seeding was first introduced in 1924 to allow countries to each nominate four players, but this was replaced in 1927 when from then players were seeded on merit.
The men’s and ladies’ singles tournament consists of 128 players, with single players and double players allocated a place dependent on their international rankings. There are 104 direct entries in to the men’s competition and 108 into the ladies’ competitions, both tournaments have 8 wild card entrants, with the remainder in each made up of qualifiers. Since the 2001 tournament, 32 players have been given seedings in the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ singles, 16 teams in the doubles events.
Traditionally Wimbledon took place over two weeks in late June through to early July, but since 2015 the tournament has moved to the first two weeks in July to allow players a three-week rest period following the French Open allowing them sufficient time to make the transition from clay to grass.
Wimbledon history includes a strict dress code for competitors (players must wear all white), Royal patronage, and the enormous consumption of strawberries and cream, Pimms and champagne! However the weather is never guaranteed, but in 2009 the addition of a retractable roof on Centre Court now helps to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain.
The 2023 Wimbledon Tennis Championship will be held at the All England Club, Wimbledon, London between 3rd July 2023 and 16th July 2023.
