2020 Glorious Goodwood

Goodwood Racecourse is a horse racing track five miles north of Chichester in West Sussex. It hosts the Goodwood Festival – also known as Glorious Goodwood – taking place over five days usually at the end of July and the beginning of August and, set against the backdrop of the Sussex countryside, is one of the highlights of the flat race season.

Goodwood has been the home of the Dukes of Richmond for over three hundred years. It was the 3rd Duke of Richmond who introduced horseracing to Goodwood in 1802, and it soon became so popular it gained its moniker, Glorious Goodwood.

Today the racecourse is thought to be one of the most exciting and most beautiful in the world and it hosts the annual Festival meeting featuring three of the UK’s 32 Group One flat races; the Susses Stakes, the Goodward Cup and the Nassau Stakes.

Traditionally, the Festival marks the end of the summer social season, but for racing professionals and fans alike, Glorious Goodwood is not only one of the most prestigious meetings it is also one of the most valuable.

In the late 18th century, at the request of Lord George Bentinck, Goodwood became the location for the first flag start on a British racecourse. The course is used for flat racing only and has an unusual, complex racecourse with a straight six furlongs.

Retired veteran jockey Richard Hughes enjoyed success at Goodwood and trainers who seem to do well include Richard Hannon and Mark Johnston who has had over 60 winners at Goodwood since 1991 and been leading trainer nine times.

The 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival – Glorious Goodwood Horse Race meeting will be held over 5 days between 28 July, 2020 and 1 August, 2020.
