The Japan Cup is one of the most prestigious horse races in Japan. Held at the Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu, Tokyo, with a purse of ¥476 million (about US $5.8 million), it is also one of the richest races in the world.
Established only in 1981, the Japan Cup is a relative newcomer on the world’s racing stage, however it has quickly established itself as a formidable international contest with horses competing from Japan, North America, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy.
The race is an invitational event, originally set up so that local thoroughbreds could compete against horses of an international calibre and to generally promote goodwill within the racing community worldwide.
Viewed as one of the most prestigious horse races in Japan, it takes place on the last Sunday of November with a maximum of 18 horses running over a distance of 2400 meters (about 1.5miles) on grass. And, despite its youth, the Japan Cup is one of the richest races in the world!
It ranks alongside the Melbourne Cup, the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeder’s Cup as one of the best end of year racing events, and has produced some truly memorable finishes in Japanese racing.
Although the first race was restricted to horses trained in Japan, the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and India, as well as ones that were specifically invited, the following year entry restrictions were abolished and the best horses from around the world were invited. The Japan Cup remains an invitational race today.
In the inaugural race in 1981, an US bred and trained horse Mairzy Doates ridden by American Cash Asmussen came home first, in front of a Canadian trained horse and another American trained horse in third place.
The following year it was again won by an American team, and then an Irish team the next, but in 1984 everything came good and a Japanese horse, trainer and rider team won the Cup and indeed the Japanese have had the majority of wins since then.
The 2020 Japan Cup horse race will be held on Sunday, 29 November 2020.
