2025 Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby, the longest running sporting event in the US, is a top rank, Grade I stakes race for 3 year old Thoroughbred horses. It is held annually on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky. The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it is run on a dirt racetrack. The winning purse is $2 million.

The race has a larger field size than most horse races with 20 horses competing in the Kentucky Derby. Colts and geldings in the race carry 126 pounds (57kg) and fillies in the race carry 121 pounds (55kg).

To take part in the Kentucky Derby the horses must first take part in a series of 35 races – Road to Kentucky Derby – that take place across the world. Points are awarded to the horses finishing in the top four of each of those races, and the 20 horses with the most points win a place at the starting gate of the Kentucky Derby.

One of the most prestigious horse races in the world, it holds the record for the longest continually held sporting event in America and often draws a crowd of over 150,000 people. The Kentucky Derby is the first race in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, followed by the Preakness Stakes race and the Belmont Stakes race.

Nothing has stopped the running of this race, despite it co-inciding with historical events such as The Great Depression and World Wars I & II, and it is often described as “the most exciting two minutes in sports”.

The history of the Kentucky Derby can be traced back to 1872 when American Meriwether Lewis Clark visited Europe and while there went to the Epsom Derby in England and also mixed with members of the French Jockey Club who went on to set up the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Inspired by what he had seen in Europe, Clark returned home determined to set up an equally special horse race in the US, and as a result on 17 May 1875 the Louisville Jockey Club opened its gates and sponsored the very first Kentucky Derby with fifteen Thoroughbreds racing over one and half miles cheered on by approximately 10,000 spectators.

The 2020 Kentucky Derby horse race will be held on Saturday 2 May, 2020.
