2020 Preakness Stakes

Held on the third Saturday in May, the Preakness Stakes is an American flat thoroughbred race run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. It is a Grade I race run over 9.5 furlongs on dirt with its attendance figures ranking second only to the Kentucky Derby across North American equestrian events.

It is the second race in the US Triple Crown Series, held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes.

It was conceived two years before the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1873 and was named the Preakness Stakes by former Maryland governor Oden Bowie after one of the winning colts at Pimlico on the day it opened in 1870. The new stakes race for three-year olds was launched during its first ever spring race meeting, and has taken place in the spring ever since.

During its lifetime, the Preakness Stakes has been run at the Morris Park Racecourse in the Bronx, New York in 1890 then there was no race for three consecutive years, after which the race was run at Gravesend Race Track on Colney Island, New York for 15 years between 1894 and 1908. In 1909 it returned to Pimlico where it has remained eversince.

More recently it had experienced rocky times when the company that owned the racecourse filed for bankruptcy in 2009, however Maryland State approved a plan to buy the Stakes and the racecourse if a buyer could not be found, so saving the historic race fixture.

Part of the tradition of the race is that as soon as the Preakness Stakes winner is declared official a painter climbs a ladder to the top of the clubhouse and the colours of the owner’s silks are painted on the jockey and horse that are incorporate within the clubhouse weather vane. The traditional was started in 1909.

The 2020 Preakness Stakes horse race will be held on Saturday 16 May, 2020.
